01 Nov Tankless Vs Tank Water Heater Costs
Over time we’ve found that one of the main questions people have when selecting their next water heater is this:
“What is this going to cost?”
While I wish it was a simple as putting out numbers two numbers (one for tank and one for tankless), there are different things to consider with every install. I wanted to lay out some prices of previous projects we have done in the Denver area to better educate and help create budgets. So lets dive in and get some numbers together!
Tankless Water Heaters: $3500-$6500
Project 1
- Total Price: $3,500
- City: Lakewood, CO
- Location: Laundry room, outside wall
- Unit: Navien 240s Standard
This particular unit was a straight swap out from an older condensing model. Minimal changes to the venting were required, and the gas line was sized correctly. A condensate neutralizer was missing from the original drain pipe, so one was added.
Project 2
- Total Price: $6,200
- City: Denver, CO
- Location: Basement mechanical room, interior wall
- Unit: Rinnai RU199iN
This older Wash Park home had a 50 gallon tank originally installed and it was not keeping up with the family of six’s usage. The gas line needed an upgrade to work with the new unit and water supplies were upsized as well. New venting was ran to the exterior of the building, and a condensate pump was installed. This was one of our more complex installs, which lead to the higher costs.
Project 3
- Total Price: $4,550
- City: Englewood, CO
- Location: Basement mechanical room, interior wall
- Unit: Navien 240s Standard
I would say this is our most “typical” install type. The gas line needed minimal changes, new venting was ran thru the open basement ceiling to the exterior of the house and water lines required small changes.
Tank Water Heaters: $1800-$3500
Project 1
- Total Price: $1,850
- City: Denver, CO
- Location: Main floor laundry
- Unit: Rheem 40 Gallon
A “like for like” swap out, this was about as basic of an install as you could get. New gas connector and water connections were made. Expansion tank code upgrade installed as well.
Project 2
- Total Price: $3,000
- City: Golden, CO
- Location: Basement mechanical room
- Unit: Bradford White 50 Gallon Power Vent
Over the last few years, power vent water heaters (identified by the a blower and plastic vent piping) have become increasingly expensive. This was a size upgrade from the 40 gallon previously installed. Some moderate changes to the water pipe had to be made to do the expansion tank code upgrade.
Project 3
- Total Price: $2,150
- City: Arvada, CO
- Location: Main floor mechanical room
- Unit: Rheem 50 Gallon
“Like for like” swap out. Expansion tank added, new tool free gas shut off added. This is the tank water heater we install the most of, and seems to handle a household of 3-4 people well depending on usage.
In Conclusion: It Depends
There are several factors that go into your water heater’s installation price but my aim was to get together a basic pricing guide to help you in your decisions.
